Mornington Peninsula Petanque Club
Who is petanque for?
The Mornington Peninsula Petanque Club draws members from right across the Mornington Peninsula — Mount Martha, Mornington, Mount Eliza, Frankston, Baxter, Somerville and everywhere in between.
What brings them to Moorooduc Recreation Reserve every Sunday and Wednesday is a game that's genuinely unlike anything else on the Mornington Peninsula. It's the best place to play Petanque on the Mornington Peninsula.
You play outdoors, under the shade of the gum trees, at a pace that lets you breathe, chat, laugh, and actually enjoy the afternoon.
It's competitive enough to keep you engaged, relaxed enough to keep you coming back, and social enough that most members will tell you the friendships matter as much as the game.
If you're looking for an outdoor club on the Mornington Peninsula that's welcoming, active, and genuinely good fun — you've found it.
Petanque — who is it for?
Honestly? Almost everyone. But there are a few groups who tend to fall in love with it particularly quickly.
If you're approaching retirement or just retired — petanque arrives at exactly the right moment. You're looking for something that gets you out of the house, keeps you active, and connects you with interesting people. You want a game with some genuine skill to it, not just something to fill time. Petanque delivers all of that, twice a week, in a beautiful outdoor setting.
If you're a couple looking for something to do together — petanque is genuinely one of the few sports you can play as a pair, against other pairs, at exactly the same level. You don't need to be equally fit or equally experienced. You just need to enjoy each other's company and the occasional disputed measurement.
If bowls feels a little slow, or tennis and golf are getting harder on the body — petanque sits in a sweet spot that very few sports occupy. It's more engaging and social than bowls, far gentler on the body than tennis or golf, and has none of the formality or equipment cost of either. No green fees. No membership waiting list. No special clothing.
If you have a back issue, a shoulder problem, or reduced mobility — petanque may be one of the few sports left where none of that stops you playing competitively. The throwing action is low-impact, you can play at your own pace, and some of our best players would tell you their dodgy knee is completely irrelevant on the piste.
If you simply want to be outdoors and socialise while you play — petanque is structurally perfect for conversation. The game moves at a pace that lets you talk between throws, the teams are small, and there's always someone nearby. Most of our members will tell you the friendships are as much a draw as the game itself.
The club has members in their 40's and members in their eighties. Some play to win championships, some come for the social play and stay for the drinks afterwards. What they have in common is that they turned up once, tried it, and didn't want to stop.
